Can Foreigners Legally Ride a Motorcycle in Ha Giang? A Guide to Driving Licences & IDPs
Planning to explore Ha Giang by motorcycle? Before you start your ride, make sure your driving licence is valid for use in Vietnam and covers the type of motorcycle you plan to ride.
What Driving Licence Do I Need?
For foreign visitors, there are two main ways your motorcycle licence can be recognized in Vietnam:
1. A Vietnamese driving licence
You can ride legally with a valid Vietnamese motorcycle driving licence for the appropriate motorcycle category.
2. A foreign driving licence + 1968 Vienna Convention IDP
If your home country is a member of the 1968 Vienna Convention on Road Traffic, Vietnam recognizes the combination of your valid national driving licence and a valid International Driving Permit (IDP) issued under the Convention.
You must carry both documents when riding in Vietnam. The IDP does not replace your original driving licence. Your licence must also cover the appropriate motorcycle category for the bike you are riding.
What About ASEAN Riders?
Vietnam is a member of the ASEAN Agreement on the Recognition of Domestic Driving Licences. Under this agreement, valid domestic driving licences issued by ASEAN member countries can be recognized when the holder is making a temporary stay in another ASEAN country.
This means riders from countries such as Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, the Philippines, Brunei, Cambodia and Laos may be able to use their valid domestic motorcycle licence in Vietnam, provided it is a recognized licence and covers the type of motorcycle they are riding.
If your licence is not in English, the ASEAN agreement provides for a certified English translation to accompany it.
What If I Only Have a Car Licence?
A car driving licence does not automatically allow you to ride a motorcycle.
Your licence must authorize you to ride the relevant motorcycle category. For example, if you plan to rent a 150cc motorcycle, make sure your licence specifically covers motorcycles in the applicable category.
Important: Not Every “International Licence” Is an IDP
There are many websites selling documents called an “International Driving Licence” or “International Driver’s Licence.”
These are not necessarily the same as an official 1968 Vienna Convention IDP.
Before your Ha Giang trip, check:
- Your national driving licence is valid.
- Your licence allows you to ride motorcycles.
- Your IDP is an official 1968 Vienna Convention IDP, if required.
- The motorcycle category on your licence/IDP matches the motorcycle you intend to ride.
